Due to the fact that a major national event will be held at the Great Hall of the People and Tiananmen Square on October 21, 2007, the Chinese Athletic Association, after serious consideration and extensive negotiation with the State Sports General Administration of China and several units of the Beijing Municipal Government, has officially decided to change this year's marathon starting point, as well as part of the race route. Now, both the marathon Start and Finish will be located at the National Olympic Sports Center; and the new marathon route will be set according to this change.
The change of the route better reflects the theme of the complete marathon event – Running through Modern & Historical Beijing—as the new route not only passes by one of Beijing’s most famous parks – the Yuan Dynasty Wall Relic Park, but also allows runners a “sneak peek” at some of the newly-constructed 2008 Olympic Games venues. Participants will now run a route which passes by the National Stadium, better known as the “Bird’s Nest”; the National Aquatics Center, also called the "Water Cube"; as well as the Olympic Archery and Hockey venues. Event organizers believe that this route will showcase not only the existing culture of Beijing, but also present runners and spectators with the numerous and marvelous modern changes that the city has undergone in preparation for next year’s Olympic Games. |
