To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ruan Lingyu, Broadway Cinematheque(MOMA)proudly present: Rediscovering the Legend - Ruan Lingyu and Her Shanghai，Dec 5rd – 12th 2010.
The retrospective will present eight films featuring Ruan Lingyu in a starring role, including Love and Duty (from the Taipei Film Archive), which premiered in the
mainland after liberation; romantic comedy A Spray of Plum Blossoms from Ruan’s early Lianhua Studio years; the reputationestablishing movie Peach Blossom
Weeps Tears of Blood; Zhu Shilin’s screenwriting and directing debut Coming Home and Cai Chusheng’s New Women; the retrospective will also include the renowned
films Little Toys and The Goddess as well as her posthumous work National Customs, and the mysteriously imperfect Goodbye, Shanghai. This is the most complete
Ruan Lingyu film retrospective in mainland China in decades.As the embodiment of 1930’s Shanghai, Ruan could be at once charming, beautiful and graceful, yet
despairing, aloof, resolute. The most shining star of the silent era lived a life that could have come straight from the silver screen. While portraying women from
each class of old China during her too short career, her talent as an actress reached the highest level in the entire era.
