Yes, they are really happy to see us, people from the outside world whom they are able to trust with.
I believe, they will only open their heart to us on an individual one-on-one session. Since there is no trust in jail among those people, they will not share their own feeling while others are listening.
Therefore, they are happy to see us, someone from the outside world, and so they can talk freely to us without any worry, sharing with us something which they can't share with their friends in jail or their parents.
For them to open themselves, it will take time.
It will also require our encouragement, our respect, and our trust.
In my opinion, we should treat them as a normal people. It's a good way to show our respect. They believe they are useless to the society when they come out, so we must prove them wrong.
To gain their trust and to open their heart, I suggest we should talk more about ourselves and our own life first. To be safe, we should be careful on the information we expose to them (eg. no company name, no address, no phone number).
1. Show them pictures of outside,
2. talking about our daily life,
3. sharing with them our personal experience,
4. finding common interests with them,
5. or, asking their advice on some decisions
are all good ways to start our friendships with them.
In my opinion, we should sepereate the one-on-one session from the group session. While the group session is good for educational purpose and fun events, the individual one-on-one session is good for sharing feeling and love, and that's what it really counts for.
